Summer Cinema and Small Screen Magic

Godzilla (12A)

Director ~ Gareth Edwards

An attempt at a believable scientific explanation for the re-emergence of giant city-stomping creatures gives this version of Godzilla a good plot and a chance to establish characters and their back stories before the monster mayhem sets in. A nuclear incident in the 1990's holds the key to a threat to the whole of humanity and.... it's a monster movie, grab the popcorn and enjoy!
Cast includes Aaron-Taylor Johnson, Ken Watanabe, Elizabeth Olsen and Juliette Binoche.

A megatastic four out of five stars

Edge of Tomorrow (12A)

Director ~ Doug Liman

Time looping alien fighting action fest featuring Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt. (Takes a while for the plot to become clear so stick with it, it's worth it.) If you liked the pace and action of the Bourne movies and the sci-fi of the Matrix movies, this is for you.

A head-scratching four out of five stars.

My Week with Marilyn (15)

Director ~ Simon Curtis

A warm and touching coming-of-age movie about a young man and his first job in the film industry. Michelle Williams steals the show as the quixotic, vulnerable Marilyn Monroe who both beguiles and confounds all those around her. Eddie Redmayne plays Colin Clark the third production assistant who ultimately ends up taking sides with Marilyn against the larger-than-life Sir Lawrence Olivier (Kenneth Branagh) as they attempt to film The Prince and the Showgirl. Gorgeous attention to period detail (late 1950's) and a charming story all knitted together with a great cast.

Five out of five stars.

Cuban Fury (15)
Director ~ James Griffiths

A fun-spangled comedy about an everyman Bruce (Nick Frost) overcoming past demons to reclaim his place on the salsa dance floor in an effort to woo the new boss Julia (Rashida Jones) and stand up to his overbearing work colleague Drew (Chris O'Dowd). Cast includes Ian McShane, Olivia Coleman, Rory Kinnear & Tim Plester.

A sequin sprinkled four out five stars
