Comedy and Tragedy

With colder hearts you follow
Those well worn words
From those who saw the world
Through eyes undimmed
By the modern malaise
Where still the pearl lustre shine
Of splendour paved the streets
Now trodden with the well-heeled ring
Of your new holiday shoes

With older eyes you see
Such sights that once were feasts
Now the back of postcards
And place mats for fast meals
And seeing all in its fading glory
Do you yearn for a time
When your eyes were young
And your heart warmer
Than the wine

With modern sentiment in place
Tickets booked and heartfelt grace
You travel light
Unlike those who once
Took all
Saw all
Felt all
And never left
